This examination is not covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP).

The cost of the exam is the responsibility of the patient. MSP does not provide reimbursement for this service. Patients are encouraged to check with their extended health or third-party insurance provider regarding possible coverage.

What You Need to Know About ABUS

ABUS is a specialized 3D ultrasound screening technology developed specifically for breast cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue.

Unlike handheld ultrasound, ABUS:

  • Scans the entire breast volume automatically

  • Produces standardized, reproducible 3D images

  • Allows radiologists to review images separately from the exam

  • Provides a coronal (surgical-style) view of the breast

ABUS is designed to be used as a supplemental screening tool alongside mammography, offering a more complete evaluation when mammograms alone may not be enough.

If you’re unsure of your breast density, your mammogram report includes this information, or your physician can help guide you.

ABUS is a comfortable, non-invasive procedure. A light layer of gel is applied, and a scanner is placed on the breast to obtain clear images. Your sonographer will guide you through each step and let you know what to expect before the exam begins.

Preparation instructions will vary depending on your ultrasound exam. You will be given detailed guidelines at the time of booking to help ensure a successful scan.

Mammograms are an important tool for early breast cancer detection, but they don’t always show everything—especially in women with dense breast tissue.

On a mammogram, dense tissue appears white, just like cancer, which can make small abnormalities harder to detect.

ABUS is a supplemental screening tool that uses sound waves to create 3D images of the breast. These detailed images help specialists see through dense tissue more clearly and support earlier, more accurate detection.
