Peace of Mind Breast Screening with ABUS
Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) can help detect breast cancer earlier, when treatment is most effective, with our Peace of Mind Screening.
Pacific Diagnostic MRI offers Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS), an advanced 3D breast imaging technology specifically designed to detect cancers that may be hidden on mammography. Our goal is simple: earlier detection, better information, and greater peace of mind.
Why Choose ABUS Screening?
At Pacific Diagnostic MRI (PDM), we offer Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) as a supplemental screening option for patients seeking additional reassurance.
Peace of Mind Through Advanced Technology
- Supplemental Screening: Designed to work alongside mammography for a more complete screening approach
- Screening tests are designed to look for potential concerns but may not detect all conditions.
- Radiation-Free: Uses sound waves instead of radiation to create detailed breast images
- Standardized Process: Produces consistent, reproducible images that can be carefully reviewed by specialists
- Patients should continue routine screening mammography as recommended by their healthcare provider.

Coverage & Payment
This examination is not covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP).
The cost of the exam is the responsibility of the patient. MSP does not provide reimbursement for this service. Patients are encouraged to check with their extended health or third-party insurance provider regarding possible coverage.
Important Information
ABUS is a screening examination only and is not a diagnostic test.
Screening tests are designed to look for potential concerns but may not detect all conditions.
A normal result does not guarantee the absence of disease.
ABUS is not a substitute for screening mammography.
Patients should continue routine screening mammography as recommended by their healthcare provider.
ABUS is intended to be used as a supplemental imaging tool, particularly for individuals with dense breast tissue, to provide additional information alongside mammography.
ABUS may be beneficial if you:
- Want a more thorough screening approach
- Have been advised by your physician to consider supplemental screening
- Have a personal or family history of breast concerns
- Prefer a radiation-free supplemental option alongside your regular screening
ABUS screening is available by self-referral — no physician referral required.
What You Need to Know About ABUS
What Is ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound)?
ABUS is a specialized 3D ultrasound screening technology developed specifically for breast cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue.
Unlike handheld ultrasound, ABUS:
- Scans the entire breast volume automatically
- Produces standardized, reproducible 3D images
- Allows radiologists to review images separately from the exam
- Provides a coronal (surgical-style) view of the breast
ABUS is designed to be used as a supplemental screening tool alongside mammography, offering a more complete evaluation when mammograms alone may not be enough.
Who Should Consider ABUS Screening?
ABUS may be especially beneficial if you:
- Want a more complete screening approach
- Have a personal or family history of breast cancer
- Have had normal mammogram results but still want added reassurance
- Prefer a radiation-free supplemental screening option
If you’re unsure of your breast density, your mammogram report includes this information, or your physician can help guide you.
The Experience
ABUS is a comfortable, non-invasive procedure. A light layer of gel is applied, and a scanner is placed on the breast to obtain clear images. Your sonographer will guide you through each step and let you know what to expect before the exam begins.
Prep & Safety
Preparation instructions will vary depending on your ultrasound exam. You will be given detailed guidelines at the time of booking to help ensure a successful scan.
How Is ABUS Different from Mammography?
Mammograms are an important tool for early breast cancer detection, but they don’t always show everything—especially in women with dense breast tissue.
On a mammogram, dense tissue appears white, just like cancer, which can make small abnormalities harder to detect.
ABUS is a supplemental screening tool that uses sound waves to create 3D images of the breast. These detailed images help specialists see through dense tissue more clearly and support earlier, more accurate detection.
