MRI Frequently Asked Questions
What is MRI?
MRI is a safe, non-invasive scan that creates detailed images of the inside of the body to help doctors make accurate diagnoses. The technology uses magnetic fields and radio waves, not radiation, and is painless and highly precise.
An MRI may be used to detect conditions such as tumors, injuries, infections, or internal bleeding. It can also provide more detailed information about findings from other imaging tests like X-rays, ultrasounds, or CT scans.
Types of MRI Scans
Pacific Diagnostics MRI performs a complete range of MRI examinations, including:
- Head and Brain MRI
- Neck and Spine MRI
- Shoulder MRI
- Knee, Ankle, and Joint MRI
- Breast MRI
- Abdominal MRI
- Pelvic MRI
- Bone Marrow MRI
Before Your MRI
Most MRI examinations require no special preparation. Unless instructed otherwise:
- Eat and drink normally
- Continue taking prescribed medications
If dietary restrictions or other preparation are required, you will be informed at the time of booking.
What to Wear & What to Leave at Home
Because MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, metal objects are not permitted in the MRI room. Patients will be provided with scrubs to change into before the exam.
Items that must be removed include:
- Watches, jewelry, and metal accessories
- Credit cards, wallets, money clips
- Cell phones, electronic devices, and hearing aids
- Pens, keys, coins, and hairpins
- Clothing with zippers, buttons, snaps, hooks, underwires, or metallic threads
- Shoes with metal components and belt buckles
Secure storage is available for valuables if needed.
MRI Safety Screening
Before your MRI, you will complete a detailed MRI screening form and review it with a technologist. This is required even if you have had an MRI previously.
Please inform staff if you have or have had:
- A pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
- Neurostimulators or implanted drug infusion devices
- Aneurysm clips or metal implants
- Metal fragments or shrapnel, especially near the eyes
- Permanent cosmetics or tattoos
- Dentures or dental devices with magnetic components
- Medication patches containing metal foil
- Prior surgeries involving the brain, ears, eyes, heart, or blood vessels
If you have questions about any implanted device or medical condition, speak with the MRI technologist before your exam.
Important: If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, notify your physician and the MRI technologist prior to the examination.
What the MRI Examination Is Like
Your MRI exam is performed in a specially designed room that houses the MRI scanner.
During the exam:
- You will lie comfortably on a padded table
- The table gently moves into the scanner
- The scanner produces loud noises, which are normal
- Earplugs or headphones are provided for hearing protection
The scanner is approximately 4 feet long, and only the area being imaged is positioned at the center of the magnet.
Most MRI exams take 30–45 minutes, depending on the body part being examined and the number of images required.
During and After the MRI Exam
Patients are asked to remain still during imaging sequences, with limited movement allowed between sequences as directed by the technologist.
Throughout the exam:
- The technologist can see, hear, and speak with you at all times
- You should notify staff if you feel discomfort or have concerns
After the exam:
- Images may be briefly reviewed to ensure completeness
- There are no restrictions following MRI
- You may return to normal activities immediately
